Sports and special baggage
Especially for active vacationers, bigger pieces of baggage are an absolute must on their vacation. Whether it’s bicycles, sports weapons, skiing or snowboard equipment. Discover Airlines offers to carry your larger items safely.
You can register using the online form below or through your travel agency.
We recommend you register as early as possible, as we only have limited storage space for sports equipment. However, you must register no later than 24 hours before departure. Please enter your booking code when making the reservation.
Sports equipment can be considered part of your free baggage allowance provided the number of bags and the weight do not exceed the free baggage allowance for your travel class. However, this does not apply to the Economy Light fare.
Prices and rules for the paid carriage of sports baggage
Sports equipment is charged at a flat rate if it exceeds the free baggage allowance and the weight limitation of the relevant travel class, but does not exceed the maximum weight of 32 kg. You can check your free baggage allowance in just a few steps using the baggage calculator – based on your route, travel class and fare. You will also find prices and dimensions for the carriage of your sports equipment there.

Notes on checking in your ski baggage:
Ski baggage is always carried as bulky baggage. You can therefore drop it off at the designated desks at the airport. You can drop your ski baggage at bulky baggage desk 445 at Frankfurt Airport and at the bulky baggage desks 425-426 at Munich Airport. We kindly ask you to arrive at the airport with your bulky baggage in good time before departure. In Frankfurt, you should arrive at check-in no later than 60 minutes before departure.
Special regulations apply to the carriage of sports/hunting weapons and ammunition. The carriage of weapons or ammunition must be registered with our Service Center at an early stage. If you are traveling with any such baggage, please check in at least 120 minutes before departure on the day of your trip.
Multiple weapons may be booked per passenger. Passengers are solely responsible for compliance with customs regulations, import permits and other required documents. This applies both to entry into a country and transit.
For Lufthansa Group airlines, the ammunition must be booked separately as “AMMO” in accordance with the latest IATA standard. Other airlines may not yet use this standard and may only accept bookings without a separate “AMMO” element.
Weapons
Each weapon must be secured and unloaded and packaged in a sealed carriage container provided for this purpose. Several weapons are permitted per carriage container.
Ammunition
A maximum of 5 kg of ammunition of types 1.4S, UN 0012 or UN 0014 are permitted per passenger. Ammunition must be packed separately from the firearm in a solid container made of wood, metal or fiberboard. This container protects the ammunition from vibration, movement and unintended self-triggering. On flights to and from South Africa, the ammunition must be packed in a lockable ammunition box.

Additional information for carrying sports baggage
Please provide each item of baggage (inside and outside) with your name and your (mobile) telephone number before you drop it off at the airport. Bag tags or stickers for checked-in baggage are available free of charge from the Discover Airlines check-in counter. You can also use your own bag tags.
In general, we collect data to perform the contract of carriage you have concluded with us. This includes both passenger and baggage data. We share this data with the airlines and airports concerned to ensure that your baggage can be carried on and forwarded by other airlines and at other airports. We also assist the German customs authorities in meeting their legal obligations by granting limited access to selected data.
Large sports equipment is not part of your free baggage allowance and must always be paid for separately.
Sports equipment weighing more than 32 kg and that is more than 315 cm in length is not accepted as travel baggage. However, you can send these items as air freight. For information about air freight from Germany, you can also contact Lufthansa Cargo in Germany.
Please contact the relevant local Lufthansa Cargo office for information about shipping air freight to other destinations and from other locations.
Carriage of musical instruments
On Discover Airlines flights, you have the option of carrying your musical instrument with you in the cabin. You can carry it with you as carry-on baggage or will have to book an additional ticket depending on its weight and size. Alternatively, you can check your musical instrument as an additional bag.
Important notes for carriage:
Your musical instrument should be packed in a hard shell case with as little room for movement as possible and with good padding. This is the only way we can ensure that it is not damaged during carriage. This also applies to musical instruments that cannot be accepted as carry-on baggage in the cabin and have to be loaded at short notice.
For free carriage in the cabin, your musical instrument must not exceed dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm (height x width x depth) and a weight of 8 kg. Please note that your musical instrument will replace an accepted item of carry-on baggage and that you are not permitted to take additional bags on board.
You must book an additional seat if your musical instrument exceeds 55 x 40 x 23 cm. You must book this together with your ticket booking. Please contact our Service Center to do so. The prices for taking your musical instrument with you are based on the ticket prices available. Musical instruments that you wish to add to your booking for carriage in the cabin must not exceed the following dimensions and weights:
- 155 x 42 x 25 cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments standing in the cabin
- 110 x 42 x 50 cm (height x width x depth) for musical instruments attached to the seat
- 75 kg maximum weight
You can check in your musical instrument as an additional bag, provided it complies with the dimensions for excess baggage. You can find information about the permitted dimensions and weight limits on your flight in the baggage calculator.
