Dangerous goods
In order to ensure your safety on board, some items are not permitted in checked or carry-on baggage. Below you will find an overview of the dangerous goods you are permitted to transport and in which item of baggage.
In addition to the dangerous goods listed below, any other dangerous goods are prohibited for transport for safety reasons. The list of dangerous goods and prohibited items is not complete and can be expanded at any time. The list below also contains items that are not considered dangerous goods but are still subject to certain restrictions (e.g., weapons).

Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Quantity restriction:
- max. 2 kg / 2 liter (total net quantity of all items) per passenger
- max. 0.5 kg / 0.5 liter (net quantity) per item
Toiletries are medical, cosmetic or non-radioactive items such as:
- Hairspray
- Perfume and cologne
- Medications that contain alcohol, e.g., nasal sprays that contain alcohol
- Hand sanitizers that contain alcohol
Spray cans/aerosols for sports and personal home use:
- Only non-toxic and non-flammable spray cans/aerosols for sports or personal home use of hazard subclass 2.2 are permitted without a secondary risk.
Transportation regulations for spray cans/aerosols:
- The spray valves of the spray cans must be protected by a cap or another suitable mechanism to prevent the accidental release of the contents.
Please note:
- You must also observe the general safety regulations for commercially available liquids, gels or sprays in your carry-on baggage.
Prohibited from transport in carry-on baggage and checked baggage.
Examples of items for self-defense:
- stunning devices and items for shocking, such as stun guns, tasers and stun batons or equipment for stunning and killing livestock
- chemicals or substances that incapacitate or reduce the ability to act, such as “knockout drops”, irritant gas, pepper sprays, capsicum sprays, tear gas, acid sprays and animal repellent sprays

Transport approval required (only for firearms and ammunition).
Quantity restriction for ammunition: max. 5 kg gross weight per item of baggage and passenger
Transportation regulations for ammunition:
- Only ammunition of hazard subclass 1.4S with UN0012 or UN0014 is permitted.
- Explosive or incendiary bullets and black powder are prohibited from transport.
- The ammunition must be securely protected against movement and impacts (without empty spaces) in a robust container made of wood, metal or cardboard.
- Only ammunition for personal use may be transported.
- The permitted quantity of multiple persons may not be packed together in one or more items of baggage.
Transportation regulations for firearms:
- Only sports, hunting and service weapons are permitted for transport.
- Weapons of war are prohibited from transport.
- Each weapon must be secured and unloaded in a dedicated, sealed, robust, solid transport container, for example made of wood, metal, hard shell material or Styrofoam, and must be appropriately packaged. The passenger must provide their own container.
- Several weapons are permitted per transport container.
- Additional airport charges may be incurred due to local security measures.
Other provisions:
- Any item in the form of a weapon, such as toys or “imitation/dummy weapons”, and other weapons such as archery bows, dart guns, starting pistols, softgun pistols and other small defensive weapons such as knives, daggers, stilettos or swords may only be transported in checked baggage.
- Lighters in the form of a weapon and any electroimpulse weapons (e.g., electric shock guns or tasers), as well as weapons with explosive or flammable projectiles, are completely prohibited.
Please note:
- Firearms and ammunition must be packed in separate pieces of baggage.
- We recommend securing all items of baggage or transport containers containing firearms or ammunition with an integrated or separate lock.
- On flights to/from Italy, the item of baggage or transport container must be secured with an integrated or separate lock.
- Due to strict safety regulations, it is not possible to take weapons to/from certain destinations; the Service Center will be happy to provide you with information.

- Transport approval from the airline is required for firearms and ammunition.
- Please report any firearms and ammunition when booking the flight via the Service Center.

Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Unit restriction: max. 5 liters net total quantity per passenger*
Quantity restriction: max. 5 liters per container*
*Applies only to alcoholic beverages with more than 24% vol. to max. 70% vol. alcohol.
Transportation regulations:
- The alcoholic beverages must be in the original sales packaging.
- Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% vol. alcohol are prohibited from transport.
Please note:
- Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% vol. alcohol are not considered dangerous goods.
- The consumption of alcoholic beverages brought on board is prohibited.
Prohibited from transport.
This includes the following items:
- Sparklers
- Smoke canisters and smoke cartridges
- Explosives and fuels as well as explosives and incendiary devices, fireworks, flares, party poppers, Christmas crackers and other pyrotechnic products
- Detonators and fuses
- Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives
- Mines, grenades or other military explosives
Not permitted as or in checked baggage.
Not permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Allowed on your person.
Unit restriction: 1 small pack of safety matches or 1 small lighter*
*Only filled with liquid gas and for personal use, may not contain any other liquid fuel that has not been absorbed.
The following items are prohibited:
- Lighter fuel or lighter fluid
- Lighter refill packs
- "Strike-anywhere matches"
- "Blue Flame" lighters or cigar lighters
- Zippo lighters
- Lighters in the form of a weapon
- Lighters that are operated by lithium batteries and have no safety cap or other safety mechanisms that stop them from being activated unintentionally
Please note:
- In some countries, transporting matches or lighters is prohibited.

Replacement cartridges for camping stoves are also prohibited from transport.

Only non-toxic and non-flammable gas of hazard subclass 2.2 is permitted without a secondary risk.
Quantity restriction: max. 4 gas cartridges per passenger
Capacity limitation: max. 50 milliliters water capacity per gas cartridge (for carbon dioxide, this size corresponds to a 28 g gas cartridge.)
Transportation regulations:
- The gas cartridges or cylinders must be packed in such a way that they cannot be activated by accident.
Please note:
- Airline transport approval is required for gas cartridges or cylinders.
- Please report your gas cartridges or cylinders when booking the flight via the Service Center.

Weight restrictions: max. gross weight 5 kg per cylinder
Transportation regulations:
- Cylinder valves and regulators, where fitted, must be protected from damage that could cause the unintended release of contents.
- Oxygen gas cylinders or air cylinders must be transported in manufacturer-approved outer packaging that protects the discharge valve.
The following items are prohibited:
- Chemical oxygen generators
- Equipment or containers with liquid gas
- Personal oxygen cans (“canned oxygen”)
Please note:
- Flights from/to/within the USA: oxygen gas cylinders are prohibited on these trips.
- Transport approval is required for oxygen gas cylinders or air cylinders for medical purposes.
- Medical authorisation is required for use on board the aircraft.
- Please send us the details of your device (manufacturer’s technical data sheet or manual) to the Medical Operation Center at medicaloperation.discover-airlines@lufthansa-group.com no later than 48 hours before departure for advance registration and medical examination.

Unit restriction: 2 items per passenger
Life preservers and life vests and other self-inflating safety equipment include release mechanisms that use gas, which are subject to special transportation regulations as dangerous goods.
Definition of “self-inflating safety equipment”: a self-inflating personal safety device intended to be worn by a person.
Quantity restrictions for gas cartridges:
- max. 2 small integrated gas cartridges with non-toxic and non-flammable gas of hazard subclass 2.2. without secondary risk (e.g., carbon dioxide)
- In addition, max. 2 small replacement gas cartridges (e.g., carbon dioxide) per device.
Transportation regulations:
- The installed gas cartridge(s) may only be installed for the purpose of self-inflation.
- The device must be packed so that it cannot be accidentally activated.
- Self-inflating safety equipment with a pyrotechnic triggering mechanism of hazard class 1 is prohibited from transport.
Please note:
- For a life preserver or life vest or other self-inflating safety equipment, transport approval from the airline is required.
- Please report your life preserver or life vest or other self-inflating safety equipment when booking a flight through the Service Center.
Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.*
This regulation only applies to flights from/to/within the USA. It is generally recommended to refrain from transporting powders or powder-like substances.
* Quantity restriction: max. 350 milliliters total volume
The following substances are excluded from this regulation:
- Medications, baby food and human remains in the form of ashes
- Powder-like substances purchased in stores after security at the airport when in a sealed, transparent pouch
Please note:
- Powders or powder-like substances with a total volume of less than 350 milliliters may also be excluded from transport in carry-on baggage if, for example, there are doubts about the authenticity of the substance.

Unit restriction: 1 item per passenger
Transportation regulations for medical or clinical thermometers:
- Small medical or clinical thermometers with mercury, for personal use, must be packed in a protective case.
* Transportation regulations for meteorological thermometers with mercury:
- The meteorological thermometer or barometer must be placed in a solid outer packaging, which is provided with a sealed inner lining or a bag made of strong, leak-proof and puncture-proof material that is impermeable to mercury. This must prevent the leakage of mercury from the packaging regardless of its position.
- They may only be carried on board by representatives of governmental weather services and similar authorities.
Note for meteorological thermometers with mercury:
- Transport approval from the airline is required for meteorological thermometers or barometers with mercury.
- Please report any meteorological thermometers or barometers with mercury when booking the flight via the Service Center.
Allowed on your person.
Pacemakers or other medical devices containing radioisotopes, including those operated with lithium batteries, which are implanted or externally to the person, are permitted for transport.
Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Not permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
For safety reasons, the following items are prohibited in carry-on baggage:
- crowbars, drills and drill bits (including portable battery drills)
- tools with a blade or shaft over 6 cm in length that can be used as a weapon, such as screwdrivers and chisels
- saws, including portable battery saws, blowtorches, bolt guns and pneumatic nailers
- pointed or sharp objects such as chopping tools (axes, hatchets and cleavers), ice picks, razor blades, carpet knives, knives or scissors with a blade length of over 6 cm (measured from the hinge)
- combat sports equipment with a tip or sharp edge, such as swords and sabers
- blunt objects such as baseball and softball bats, clubs, batons, blackjacks, martial arts equipment and maces
Please note:
- Combustion engines and petrol-powered devices and tools (e.g., power saws, emergency power generators) are completely prohibited from transport.

Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Quantity restriction: max. 1 liter of flammable liquid per outer packaging
Permitted non-infectious samples and preparations:
- are from, for example, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects and other invertebrate animals,
- contain small quantities of flammable liquids UN 1170, UN 1198, UN 1987 or UN 1219 and
- must comply with the transport regulations below.
Transportation regulations for inner packaging:
- Variant 1: The samples or preparations are wrapped in a paper towel and/or sieve cloth moistened with alcohol or an alcoholic solution, and, in addition, packed in a sealed plastic bag.
- Variant 2: The samples or preparations are packed in a vial or a solid container containing alcohol or an alcoholic solution.
- Any free fluid contained therein must not exceed 30 milliliters.
- The finished packed samples and preparations are then packed in another sealed plastic bag with absorbent material.
Transportation regulations for outer packaging:
- This plastic bag must then be packed in a strong outer packaging with suitable padding material.
- The total amount of combustible liquid per outer packaging must not exceed 1 liter.
- The fully packaged outer packaging is marked with “scientific research specimens, not restricted Special Provision A180 applies”.
Please note:
- Infectious samples or preparations such as blood samples, tissues, fungi or bacterial and viral cultures that can affect humans or animals, as well as substances marked UN3373, are prohibited from transport.
Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Transport approval required.
Quantity restriction: max. 2.5 kg dry ice (carbon dioxide, solid) net weight per passenger
Transportation regulations:
- Checked bags containing dry ice must each be marked “Dry Ice” or “Carbon Dioxide, solid”. In addition, it must state the net weight of the contained dry ice or an indication that the net weight is 2.5 kg or less.
- The packaging must allow gas to escape.
- Dry ice in solid form (carbon dioxide) is only permitted for the cooling of perishable goods, which are not themselves considered dangerous goods.
Please note:
- For dry ice (carbon dioxide, solid), transport approval from the airline is required.
- Please report your dry ice (carbon dioxide, solid) when booking a flight via the Service Center.
Prohibited from transport.*
Magnetic materials with UN2807 are considered dangerous goods and are prohibited from transport.
Examples of UN 2807 magnetic materials are:
- ferromagnetic metals and cover materials with relatively high magnetic field strength, such as magnetrons,
- unshielded permanent magnets without holding rods installed,
- magnetic objects with a magnetic field strength that generate a compass deviation of 2 degrees at a distance of 2.1 meters, i.e. min. 0.418 A/m or 0.000525 Gauss.
* Due to their low magnetic field strength, quantities for personal use are permitted of:
- Consumer goods that contain magnets, such as ordinary refrigerator magnets, magnetic kitchen knife holders, mobile phone or credit card cases or plug-ins that function with a magnetic lock
- Bracelets for repelling sharks with a magnetic field (e.g., Sharkbanz): These bracelets must be transported in the manufacturer’s transport box.
- Electromagnets, as they are used in various devices, such as search devices, are permitted if they are completely switched off, protected against unintentional activation, or are not connected to their power source.
Prohibited from transport.
This includes the following items:
- bleach or bleaching powder
- swimming pool chemicals
- dyes
Not permitted as or in checked baggage.*
Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
* Only fuel replacement cartridges are permitted in checked baggage.
Fuel cell systems and replacement fuel cartridges for portable electronic devices such as cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers and camcorders must be securely packaged to prevent damage.
Quantity limitation of replacement cartridges: max. 2 units per passenger.
Volume restrictions for fuel cells or fuel cell cartridges:
- Liquids: max. 200 milliliters
- Solids: 200 g
- Liquid gases: max. 120 milliliters for non-metallic fuel cells or fuel cell cartridges, or max. 200 milliliters for metallic fuel cells or fuel cell cartridges
- Hydrogen in metal hydride: max. water capacity of 120 milliliters
Transportation regulations for fuel cell cartridges:
- Each fuel cell cartridge must be accompanied by a declaration that it complies with the specifications of IEC PAS 62282-6-100 Ed. 1 including Amendment 1, as well as with the specification of the maximum quantities and the type of fuel.
Transportation regulations for fuel cell systems:
- Fuel cell systems must be labeled by the manufacturer with “Approved for carriage in aircraft cabin only”.
- It is not permitted for the fuel cell systems to charge the electronic device when the device is not in use.
- Fuel cell systems may only contain flammable liquids, corrosive substances, liquefied gases, substances that react with water or hydrogen in metal hydride. Fuel cell systems whose only function is to charge a battery within the device are prohibited.
- Reloading/refilling fuel cells on board is prohibited; only the insertion of replacement cartridges may be carried out on board.

Permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Insulation packaging containing cooled, liquefied nitrogen (Dry Shipper), which is completely absorbed in porous material, may:
- only be used for products that are not themselves considered dangerous goods,
- not allow pressure to build up inside the container,
- not allow any release of cooled liquid nitrogen, regardless of the packaging orientation of the insulation packaging (Dry Shipper).

- More detailed information on the transport of “samples or preparations” can be found in the section “Non-infectious samples and preparations with small amounts of flammable liquids”.

The transportation regulations below relate to parachutes with a pyrotechnic automatic activation mechanism (AAD), such as Cypres AAD.
Transportation regulations:
- Written documentation from an authorized national authority containing details of the automatic activation mechanism (AAD) must be provided, as well as the confirmation that the mechanism is not classified as being dangerous goods.

Quantity restriction: 1 device per passenger
Transportation regulations:
- The use of hairstyling devices with hydrocarbon gas cartridges is prohibited on board.
- The protective cover must be attached securely over the heating element.
Please note:
- Gas refill packs for hairstyling devices with hydrocarbon gas cartridges are prohibited from transport.
- For more information on transporting hairstyling devices with lithium batteries, please refer to the section Diving lamps, soldering irons and other heat-developing objects with built-in batteries.
Security briefcases/bags and cash containers/pockets are prohibited from transport.
Permitted as or in checked baggage.
Not permitted as or in carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Permeation devices for calibrating air quality monitoring systems are only permitted to be carried in checked baggage.
The following additional items are prohibited both in checked baggage and carry-on baggage:
- Containers of flammable liquids such as paints, varnishes, thinners, cleaning agents, solvents or gasoline
- Containers of non-flammable paints
- Highly flammable substances and items such as grill lighters, fuel paste, butane or propane gas bottles, dry spirit, fuel or charcoal
- Poisonous, toxic or infectious compounds and substances, such as mercury, rat poison, insecticides, arsenic, cyanide or bacterial and viral cultures or infectious laboratory samples
- Caustic and corrosive substances such as acids, alkalis, bases or wet batteries, rust protection or rust removal materials, sulfur dioxide solutions or chemical sets
- Radioactive materials and objects
- Substances that develop flammable gases when in contact with water, such as carbide
- Carbon dioxide cartridges (CO2) for mineral water treatment over 50 milliliters
- Internal combustion engines and fuel-powered devices and tools (e.g., lawn mowers, power saws, emergency power generators). This applies regardless of whether the devices or tools are new (originally packaged) or used.
- Flammable, non-flammable, frozen and toxic propellants
- Breakable objects such as televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators or PC screens

Other transportation information:
- If you still transport dangerous goods that are not approved for transport, these goods may be taken from you, and you are liable.
- These transportation guidelines comply with national regulations and the current IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for the safe transportation of dangerous goods. Lufthansa Airlines reserves the right to take measures with extended restrictions for security reasons.
- The transportation regulations may vary on flights with codeshare partners. Please contact the relevant airline directly.
- There may be country regulations that result in measures with expanded restrictions.
